Thomian fly-half Mayanka Dias breaks through
The fifth week of the Dialog Schools Under-19 Rugby League 2026 on Saturday produced another thrilling round of school rugby with several close encounters, high-scoring contests, and impressive comebacks. Defending contenders continued to stamp their authority, while a few teams kept their unbeaten records intact after another entertaining weekend of action.
The highlight fixture of the week came from Bambalapitiya, where St. Peter’s College continued their winning streak with a hard-fought 17/13 victory against Wesley College at the St. Peter’s College Grounds. The Peterites scored through two tries, two conversions, and a penalty, while Wesley responded with two tries and a penalty. The match remained evenly balanced until the final moments, with the hosts showing better composure under pressure to secure another valuable win. At the short breather, the Double Blues led 8/5.
At Rajagiriya, Ananda College produced a dominant attacking performance to overcome Mahanama College 31/14. The Anandians crossed the line five times and added three conversions in a convincing display. Mahanama fought hard and managed two converted tries but struggled to contain the pace and movement of the home side. At the short breather, the lads from Maradana led 17/7.
Meanwhile, St. Joseph’s College recorded one of the biggest wins of the week when they hammered Prince of Wales’ College 41/3 at the CR & FC Grounds. The Josephians ran in seven tries and three conversions while limiting their opponents to a solitary penalty. At the short breather, the Darley Road school led 21/3.
The traditional encounter between Royal College and S. Thomas’ College lived up to expectations, with Royal edging out a thrilling 29/24 victory at the Royal Sports Complex. Royal scored five tries and two conversions, while the Thomians replied with four tries and two conversions in a fiercely contested battle. With this nail-biting win, Royal took home the Michael Gunaratne Trophy. At the short breather, Royal led 19/5.
At Maradana, Zahira College defeated Thurstan College 36/28 in another high-scoring game. Zahira managed six tries and three conversions, while Thurstan stayed in contention throughout with four converted tries. Zahira led 22/21 at the short breather.
Elsewhere, DS Senanayake College overcame Lumbini College 24/19 at Havelock Park after leading 19/7 at the breather.
In Kandy, Sri Sumangala College staged a remarkable second-half recovery to beat St. Anthony’s College 33/24 at the Pallekele Rugby Stadium after trailing 17/0 at halftime, producing one of the finest comebacks of the season so far.
After Round 1, defending League champions Trinity, Isipathana, St. Peter’s, Wesley, Zahira, and Royal qualified for the Cup segment in the Super Round, which will commence in June.
In the Plate segment, Sumangala, St. Anthony’s, St. Joseph’s, Ananda, S. Thomas’, and Thurstan or Science will lock horns.
In the Bowl segment, DS, Lumbini, Mahanama, Prince of Wales, Kingswood, and Science or Thurstan will lock horns during June. (SJ)
