FIFA friendly encounter vs Brunei

By Althaf Nawaz

Two Pereras (Dillon and Leon) guided the national football team to notch up a 1-0 win over the higher ranked Brunei in their FIFA friendly encounter played at the Alpine Football Field in Thailand yesterday.

After a barren first half where neither team could make an impact in the scoreline, it was Leon Perera who sneaked through the rival defence to score a fascinating left footed goal after his team mate Dillion Perera fired a well measured kick to the box area.

It was a scintillating performance by the Lankan Lions (ranked 200) against a team ranked 185, and this win will no doubt enable them to climb up further in the rankings while giving them the all-important impetus to play the Asia Cup 2027 (Saudi Arabia) qualifying fixture against Chinese Taipei in a few days in Colombo.

This win was registered after 16 years.
