Women’s U19 Tri-Series in Australia

Aseni Thalagune captured five Aussie wickets for 42

Indira Panelli was Australia’s top scorer with 59

Sri Lanka Women put up a tremendous fight back before losing to host country Australia Women by one wicket in their Women’s U19 Tri-Series 50-over match played at the Ian Healy Oval, Brisbane yesterday.

Chasing a target of 175 Australia were at one time cruising to victory at 161-4 in the 37th over when seamer Nethmi Upeksha had top scorer Indira Panelli stumped for 59 (81 balls, 3 fours) and Filippa Suesee caught off her next over to trigger a collapse. Australia lost four wickets for four runs to slump to 165-8. But Alyssa Dermody kept a cool head to steer her side to victory with an unbeaten 37 scored off 43 balls (3 fours). Off-spinner Aseni Thalagune was the pick of the Lankan bowlers ending with figures of 5/42.

A last wicket stand of 32 between Yeshali Jithara (16) and Chamodi Herath (20*) saw Sri Lanka reach 174 after choosing to bat first. None of the Lankan batters could come up with a noteworthy contribution with 25 being the highest score. Openers Sanjana Kavindi and Vimoksha Balasuriya put on a stand of 49 but the rest could not capitalize on it. Once again Sri Lanka were helped largely to their total by 35 extras of which 30 were wides.

Australia finished on top of the ODI series winning both matches while Sri Lanka ended in second place with one win and one loss. England lost both their matches to Australia and Sri Lanka.

On Saturday the three teams commence a T20I series with Australia taking on England at Gold Coast.
