The National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka last week celebrated the Olympic Day 2025 at the historic Galle Fort. The event aligns with the global Olympic Day theme: “Let’s Move?”
Olympic Day is commemorated annually on 23 June to mark the founding of the modern Olympic Movement in 1894. The day encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to engage in physical activity and embrace the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect. Across the globe, celebrations typically include walks, runs, educational programs, and cultural showcases that inspire communities to come together under the Olympic spirit of “Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together.”
This year’s event began with an Olympic Day Walk starting at 10:00 a.m. from the Football Ground in Galle, culminating at Hall de Galle, where the main ceremony took place. The walk and celebration was led by senior officials from the Ministry of Sports and the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka.
A broad spectrum of participants joined the event, including Olympians, members of the National Selection Committee, Executive Committee members of NOC Sri Lanka, university students, schoolchildren, national athletes, and representatives from various sports federations and organisations.
The program included the ceremonial placing of the Olympic torch, traditional and cultural performances, a welcome dance, and official addresses. The event was further enriched by the presence of several prominent sports figures and distinguished personalities from other fields, highlighting the inclusive and celebratory nature of Olympic Day.
