South Africa with a game in hand against Sri Lanka on Friday are out of the Women’s ODI Tri-Series final after they suffered their third straight loss in the tournament losing by 23 runs to India at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium yesterday.

It turned out to be a run fest with 651 runs scored off 100 overs. Invited to bat first India batted South Africa out of the match by piling up a massive 337-9. South Africa without their captain and best batter, Laura Woolvardt, for yesterday’s game put up a brave performance to end with 314-7.

It was always going to be a tough chase, but South Africa kept fighting hard. Contributions from the top-order set-up things nicely for Annerie Dercksen and Chloe Tryon, the two big-hitters. Harmanpreet Kaur, the Indian captain kept rotating her spinners around, but it was evident that the two batters enjoyed whatever was on offer. Both struggled with injuries right through the chase, but they kept finding the boundaries and took the game deep.

Dercksen battling cramps scored 81 off 80 balls (5 fours, 2 sixes) and acting captain Tryon an audacious knock of 67 off 43 balls (4 fours, 5 sixes).

South Africa who chose to bowl started well, taking three wickets inside the first seven overs. But Player of the Match Jemimah Rodrigues and her blistering hundred (123 off 101 balls, 15 fours, 1 six), her second in WODIs put India right back on top. Rodrigues was involved in two excellent partnerships, 88 with Smriti Mandhana (51 off 63 balls, 6 fours) and a record 122 with Deepti Sharma (93 off 84 balls, 10 fours, 2 sixes) which bettered India Women’s highest fifth wicket stand in WODIs of 108 by Mithali Raj and Veda Krishnamurthy.

Following Rodrigues’ exit, Deepti took control and ensured that the momentum wasn’t lost. South Africa were a little sloppy on the field and let too many runs slip away.

Yesterday’s loss meant that South Africa have won only one of their last ten ODIs. It was exactly the opposite statistic for India, who have lost only one of their last ten games, and controlled proceedings for almost all of the match yesterday. Friday’s game between Sri Lanka and South Africa will be more or less a dead rubber with the host having already qualified to play India in the final on Sunday.
