Since playing their first-ever bilateral Women’s T20 International series against West Indies in 2010, Sri Lanka completed their first whitewash of a series when they beat Bangladesh 3-0 at Sylhet on Saturday.
Prior to this win, Sri Lanka had beaten West Indies 2-0 in the Caribbean, with only rain preventing them from making a clean sweep of the three-match series. This win against Bangladesh coming on the back of that victory is a sure sign that the team under their versatile and most experienced all-round cricketer Chamari Athapaththu is certainly making steady progress in preparation for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England in June.
With the World Cup in mind, Sri Lanka continued to play two fast bowlers Mithali Ayodhya and Malki Madara for virtually all the matches despite the Bangladesh pitches being more conducive to spin.
For Jamie Siddons, it was a winning start to his new role as head coach of the Sri Lanka Women’s cricket team. Sri Lanka not only won the WT20I series but also completed a double by winning the WODI series 2-1. Their only loss came in the tour opener – the first WODI. After that, they won five white-ball matches on the trot.
Central among Sri Lanka’s WT20I win over Bangladesh was Athapaththu, who played a key role in her team winning the series 3-0. 36-year-old Athapaththu, who has no immediate plans to retire, finished as the leading run scorer with 115 runs and took four wickets to take the Player of the Series award. Not far behind was Harshitha Samarawickrama with 113 runs, which included scores of 61 and 49.
However, the most impressive was inexperienced Imesha Dulani, who appeared in only 12 WT20Is but ended the series with scores of 55, 27, and 19. She was Player of the Series in the WODI series.
