Sri Lanka Rugby’s decision to hire a New Zealand coach for a hefty sum of $ 7,500 per month has come under severe criticism, as the national team continues to struggle on the international stage.

Despite the investment, there has been little to no visible progress, with the team failing to secure key wins in recent tournaments.

Many rugby enthusiasts and former players are questioning the justification of such an expense, especially when local rugby infrastructure and grassroots development remain underfunded. Critics argue that results, not reputations, should justify such high payments, calling for greater accountability from Sri Lanka Rugby officials.

Rodney Gibbs, former All Blacks Sevens assistant coach, has been appointed as the new Head Coach of the Sri Lankan National Rugby Team.

He took over the role on 25 May, 2025, with the primary goal of preparing the team for the Asia Rugby Emirates Men’s Championship 2025. He will also be involved in the Rugby World Cup 2027 qualifiers.
