Asian Beach Games, Sanya 2026

Sri Lanka endured a challenging day at the Asian Beach Games, Sanya 2026, facing tough opposition across multiple disciplines.

Despite the setbacks, there were glimpses of promise, particularly in the men’s kabaddi competition where Sri Lanka managed to secure a morale-boosting victory.

The Sri Lankan men’s kabaddi team registered their only win of the day with a solid 2-0 performance against Thailand, showing confidence and tactical discipline.

However, they found the going difficult against stronger outfits, going down 2-0 to both China and Iran in their other group encounters.

In the women’s beach kabaddi competition, Sri Lanka faced equally formidable opponents and suffered 2-0 defeats against India and Iran.

While the results did not go in their favour, the exposure to top-tier Asian teams is expected to be invaluable for the players’ development.

The beach volleyball courts also proved challenging, with the Sri Lankan women’s team falling 2-0 to China in their opening fixture.

The men’s beach volleyball team, meanwhile, faced a tough lineup and went down 2-0 in all three matches against Japan, China, and Kazakhstan.

In handball, the Sri Lankan men delivered a spirited performance, pushing their opponents before narrowly losing 2-1 in a closely contested encounter.

Although the results were mixed, the experience gained competing at the Asian Beach Games will serve as a crucial stepping stone, offering Sri Lankan athletes valuable international exposure ahead of future tournaments. (SJ)
