  • Court confirms violations in Sri Lanka Rugby case; stakeholders and media urged to respect judiciary

Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) President Roshan Deen yesterday issued the following statement on Court proceedings against the Director General of Sports Shemal Fernando.

The statement details the developments during the Court of Appeal hearing held yesterday (28 April), where:

  • The Attorney General announced his withdrawal from defending the Director General due to a conflict of interest.
  • The Court fixed the date for the Contempt Inquiry against the Director General for 15 May 2025.
  • The Court confirmed that the Director General had violated earlier rulings, undermining judicial authority.

The statement also emphasises the importance of respecting Sri Lanka’s judiciary and calls upon all controlling rugby bodies and media outlets to refrain from making public demands while the matter is before the Courts.
