South Korea came from behind to defeat Czech Republic 2-1 in their FIFA World Cup opener, with substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu scoring the winner in the 80th minute. Ladislav Krejci had given the Czechs a surprise lead before Hwang In-beom equalised and then provided the assist for Oh’s decisive strike. Goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu preserved the victory with a string of late saves.
In the tournament opener, co-hosts Mexico cruised to a 2-0 victory over South Africa at Estadio Azteca. Julian Quinones scored the first goal of the World Cup in the ninth minute before veteran striker Raul Jimenez doubled the lead in the second half. South Africa ended the match with nine players after Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane were sent off.
