Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) has conducted that the Inter-Club Sevens 2026 will be worked off only in Colombo as Kandy Sports Club will not take part in the tournament after failing to confirm participation before the deadline.

SLR has decided to shift the Kandy leg of the tournament from Nittawela Ground to Colombo. This year’s tournament will also feature the participation of an international club side from Dubai, providing local players with the opportunity to compete against overseas opposition. First leg of the tournament will take place on 21 and 22 March at Longdon Place, while the second leg will be worked off on 28 and 29 March at the Racecourse Ground. Both Royal Sports Complex and Havelock Park are unavailable due to being booked for the schools President’s Trophy Knockout Tournament which is currently taking place in Colombo.

Kandy SC had requested permission to participate only in the Kandy leg of the series due to heavy cost in travel and accommodation to Colombo, but SLR did not allow this as all participating teams were required to compete in both legs of the series or withdraw entirely.

The Sevens Series will also play a key role in identifying players for the national squad as the country prepares for upcoming Asian Rugby Sevens, which will be staged in China and Sri Lanka, plus the much important Asian Games taking place later this year in Nagoya, Japan.

Further, the national sevens players will be contracted by SLR starting this year. (SJ)
