Following a thrilling and memorable debut last year, D.S. Senanayake College, Colombo and St. Anthony’s College, Kandy are set to meet once again for the second edition of the Alles Cup, a fixture that is fast establishing itself as a meaningful tradition in Sri Lanka’s schools rugby calendar.
First played in 2025, the Alles Cup was introduced to honour the legacy of D.S. Senanayake College Founding Principal and a proud alumnus of St. Anthony’s College the late R.I.T. Alles. More than a contest for silverware, the encounter reflects a shared philosophy between the two institutions: nurturing well-rounded individuals through a balance of academic excellence and sporting discipline.
The inaugural match delivered an electrifying contest, with D.S. Senanayake College emerging victorious with a 26–19 win. As the teams prepare to face off once more, anticipation is high for another closely fought encounter, with both sides eager to write the next chapter in this evolving rivalry.
Building on the strong foundation laid in its first year, the Alles Cup continues to celebrate not only competition, but also the deep-rooted values that define both schools, leadership, teamwork, resilience and respect. With proud rugby histories and passionate communities behind them, the annual fixture is quickly becoming a symbol of unity as much as it is of rivalry.
“The Alles Cup has already become something truly special for both our schools. It represents far more than a game of rugby, it is a reflection of our values, history and a vision that continues to guide our students,” said D.S. Senanayake College Principal Sampath Weragoda. “Following last year’s memorable encounter, we look forward to another spirited contest that showcases the growth of our players and the strength of schools rugby.”
Echoing similar sentiments, St. Anthony’s College, Kandy Rector/Principal Rev. Fr. Henry Bernard Wijethunghe added, “This fixture has quickly grown into an occasion we deeply value. It brings together two proud institutions in a way that celebrates tradition while inspiring the next generation. We anticipate a competitive and respectful game that upholds the true spirit of rugby.”
The Alles Cup remains a tribute to a visionary educationist whose influence continues to shape generations. As D.S. Senanayake College reached the milestone of 50 years of rugby this year, the continuation of this encounter adds further significance to its journey. In 2025, the Under-16s of D.S. Senanayake College won the Wickramaratne Trophy against, St. Anthony’s College 5 - 0, further strengthening the school’s sportsmanship.
The second edition of the Alles Cup will take place on 9 May at Havelock Park, bringing together two formidable teams. With momentum building and pride at stake, the stage is set for another compelling chapter in what promises to become a lasting annual tradition in Sri Lankan schools rugby.
