Sebastianites, Colts, Army SC and Moors SC recorded wins in their respective matches on the opening weekend of matches of the Major Club Emerging tournament concluded yesterday.
Former Thomian left-arm fast bowler Tehan Schaffter ripped through the SSC batting twice taking a match bag of 10 for 66 (including 6/35 in the second innings) to help Sebastianites pull off a creditable 83-run win at the SSC grounds. Opener Sandun Fernando’s century (122 off 262 balls, 11 fours) left SSC with the task of chasing down 301 for victory.
But despite a valiant knock of 99 off 95 balls (16 fours) from skipper Lakshitha Manasinghe, SSC with the likes of three Sri Lankan U19 World Cup players in their 11 Sadisha Rajapaksa, Chamindu Wickramasinghe and Treveen Mathew were dismissed for 217 in their second innings.
Isipatana MV’s 17-year-old off-spinner Kavindu Amantha produced a fine spell of bowling taking five wickets for 43 to give Colts a massive win by an innings and 147 runs over Kalutara TC at Surrey Village, Maggona.
Proving an ideal foil to Amantha was left-arm spinner Rohan Sanjaya who took four for 63. Colts had earlier piled up a massive 445-2 declared with Thomian Ravindu Rasantha hitting a career best double century (224*) and figuring in a huge partnership of 395 for the second wicket with Avishka Perera (172).
Former Josephian right-arm fast-medium bowler Lakshan Gamage took a match bag of eight wickets including 5/23 in the first innings to bowl Army SC to a nine-wicket win over Kandy Customs CC at Panagoda.
Theeshan Vithushan, the slow left-arm spinner from Jaffna Central College ran through the Navy SC batting taking a match bag of 11 wickets for 89 (6/34 & 5/55) to give Moors SC a thumping win by 235 runs at Moors grounds.
Former Sebastianite Janishka Perera’s superb knock of 150 off 188 balls (19 fours, 4 sixes) for Moors in the second innings left Navy chasing a stiff target of 350 to win, but they succumbed for 114 to the wily spin of Vithushan.
CCC, NCC, Chilaw Marians CC, Panadura SC and Galle CC had to be satisfied with first innings points after their respective matches ended in draws. (ST)
