Defending League champions Trinity College will be determined to maintain their winning momentum when they face Sri Sumangala College, Kandy, in their Dialog Schools Rugby League Under-19 encounter scheduled for tomorrow at the Nittawela Rugby Stadium.
Having started strongly, Trinity will look to assert their dominance once again. Though Trinity had two easy half-a-century plus scores against the Antonians and Lumbini, their game against Sumangala will be a tight one as the boys from Kandy are no pushovers, winning their two games against Science and D.S. Senanayake College. Trinity skipper Shan Althaf and the lads know the threatening method of play of Sumangala, and are up for some running rugby when they return to Nittawela Rugby Stadium after a couple of years to play.
Week 3 of the Schools Rugby League kicks off today (8) with a clash between title contenders St. Peter’s College and newcomers Prince of Wales at the Air Force Ground in Ratmalana. The Peterites, fresh from impressive wins over Mahanama and St. Joseph’s, will be confident of extending their unbeaten run.
A total of seven matches are set for tomorrow, creating a busy schedule and posing a challenge for Referees’ Society Head Sanjaya Fernando in appointing experienced officials for each fixture. The packed line-up reflects the growing intensity of the competition.
Wesley College, another top team for the title, will meet Ananda College at Rajagiriya, with the Double Blues, led by Kaizer Lye, eager to preserve their unbeaten record. Their structured play and consistency make them favourites heading into this encounter.
At Longdon Place, St. Anthony’s College will take on D.S. Senanayake College, with both teams searching for their first win of the season. D.S. Senanayake appears to have a slight advantage based on recent performances.
Royal College will host Zahira College at the Royal Sports Complex in what promises to be a tightly contested game between two unbeaten sides. Meanwhile, Thurstan College, after impressive outings against S. Thomas’ and Royal, will look to continue their form against Kingswood at Sugathadasa Stadium.
Mahanama will host Joes at Ratmalana tomorrow in which Joes looks a yard faster. In other matches, S. Thomas’ College are favoured against Science College after bouncing back with a win over Kingswood.
Isipathana College should have the edge over Lumbini on 10 May at Police Park, despite the latter’s potential to spring a surprise.
