The 2025 Dialog Schools Rugby League roared into action with an exciting opening weekend, as Wesley College, S. Thomas’ College, and St. Peter’s College all registered important victories to kickstart their campaigns, while Vidyartha and St. Joseph’s College played out a thrilling stalemate.

Wesley College produced the most dominant performance of the week, thrashing Science College 63/15 at Havelock Park. Wesley ran in nine tries, with each one of them successfully converted, showing clinical finishing and accurate kicking. Science managed two tries, a conversion, and a penalty, but were completely outplayed in every facet of the game.

In a dramatic encounter at Nittawela, Vidyartha College came back to draw the game against Joes in the central hills. The match ended in 24 apiece for both the teams. This underlined the close competitiveness between the sides. Joes showed resilience in holding off a strong Vidyartha outfit on their home turf.

At the end of the first round, this result of a draw, where they shared points, could hurt both teams when the calculation is done for the Cup and Plate segments, as Trinity and Royal are also in the same group.

At Mount Lavinia, Thomians edged out Kingswoodians 29/28 in a thriller.

Meanwhile, defending champions, St. Peter’s College kicked off their league with a hard fought 38/22 win over newcomers to ‘A’ Division Ananda College. This game, which was played at Bambalapitiya, saw the hosts scoring six tries with four conversions, while the lads from Maradana replied with three tries, two conversions, and a solitary penalty.

On the opening day of the tournament, Trinity, DS, Zahira, and Royal recorded wins.

With the first week complete, the Dialog Schools Rugby League has already delivered intense action and high drama, setting the stage for another thrilling season.
