Saracens SC and Sandalanka CC entered the final of the Governors Trophy final when they won their respective semi-final matches played yesterday.
Saracens SC defeated Old Dharmapalians SC by five wickets to qualify for their second final in successive years, and Sandalanka CC beat Lankan CC by 8 runs under the DLS method.
The two teams will meet in the final at the NCC grounds on 5 June.
Veteran left-arm spinner Dilshan Mendis captured 4/22 off 9 overs and former first-class cricketer Janaka Sampath hit an authoritative half-century (68 off 92 balls, 5 fours, 1 six) to enable Saracens SC beat Old Dharmapalians SC at the Air Force grounds, Katunayake.
Choosing to bat first in a game reduced to 42 overs, Old Dharmapalians SC were restricted to a total of 171-9 by some parsimonious bowling headed by Mendis who won the Best Bowler’s award last year representing Unichela SC and Chamath Gomez (2/21). Saracens SC in their run chase had the game very much under their control with Sampath playing an anchor role at one end. When he got out with the score on 146, Saracens SC still required a further 30 to reach their target. Gomez followed his fine bowling performance by contributing with the bat, scoring 23* of the 30-run partnership with Dellon Peiris (21*) which was inclusive of three sixes.
In a match affected by rain at Army grounds, Dombagoda, Sandalanka CC batting first were dismissed for 152 with Hasindu Perera making a top score of 51 (off 107 balls, 1 four, 1 six) and Lankan CC skipper Mangala Pradeep picking up three wickets with his slow left-arm orthodox deliveries. Lankan CC in their turn tried their best to make a match of it chasing a revised target of 122 off 28 overs, but lost too many wickets in doing so and fell short by nine runs with their last pair at the wicket.
