 Governor’s Trophy two-day tournament

Saracens SC won the Governor’s Trophy two-day tournament when they beat Old Dharmapalians SC on first innings in the match played at Surrey Cricket Ground, Maggona Wednesday.

The win saw Saracens SC finish on top of the league standings with 3 points and emerge champions. Lankan CC with two points finished in second place and Old Dharmapalians SC third with one.

There was a sigh of relief and joy in the Saracens SC camp as soon as they passed Old Dharmapalians SC’s total of 270-8. Saracens SC eventually finished on 311-8 and it was an all-round contribution that led them to this success.

“This is a huge achievement. Splendid team work. I am very proud of the team, manager, support staff and the committee for their wholehearted support at all times,” said Saracens SC President Nuski Mohamed.

Saracens SC has been languishing in the Governor’s Trophy for the past two years and last year they missed becoming champions when they lost to Kurunegala SC by six runs. However, this time around they were more determined and focused to win it.

Saracens SC also won the Governor’s Trophy 50-over tournament to complete a grand double for the season.

Continuing from their overnight score of 259-7 Old Dharmapalians SC closed their innings following the dismissal of their centurion Viranga Yeshan for 126 (254 balls, 11 fours). Skipper Shanaka Sampath remained unbeaten on 58 (158 balls, 4 fours, 1 six).

Saracens SC began their reply with the worst possible start losing Janaka Sampath for a second ball duck. But Anushka Perera (80 off 131 balls, 11 fours) who was Player of the Final in the Governor’s Trophy 50-over tournament led a recovery in partnerships of 71 with Amitha Dabare (50 off 60 balls, 8 fours, 1 six) and 87 with Kavindu Nimasara (49 off 58 balls, 6 fours, 1 six). Saracens SC then lost two wickets for one run to slide to 212-6. But once again the players rose to the occasion with Nayana Fernando (61 off 85 balls, 4 fours, 3 sixes) and Deshan Fernando (50 off 54 balls, 5 fours) putting together a stand worth 95 for the seventh wicket that more or less sealed the deal for Saracens SC as they sped past the Old Dharmapalians SC total.
