Saracens SC, Unichela SC qualify for Governor’s Trophy final

Saracens SC and Unichela SC won their rain-affected semi-finals against Kandukara CC and Old Dharmapalians SC respectively to qualify for the final of the Governor’s Trophy.

Saracens SC won through to the final when they beat Kandukara CC by the toss of the coin after rain had interfered with their semi-final played at the Army Grounds, Dombagoda yesterday.

In a game reduced to 40 overs-a-side, Saracens SC invited to bat first racked up an impressive 220-5 with opener Gihan Lakshitha being their mainstay with an unbeaten 81 off 113 balls (7 fours). Lakshitha was involved in two fruitful partnerships of 82 for the second wicket with Rashmika Mevan (39 off 44) and 63 for the fourth wicket with Gavin Boteju (39 off 39). In reply, Kandukara CC lost two wickets for 10 runs in three overs before rain disrupted play and forced the game to be decided by the toss of a coin. Saracens SC skipper Vinuja Ranasinghe called correctly to see his team into the final.

Unichela SC eased through to the final beating Old Dharmapalians SC by 62 runs (DLS method) in their semi-final played at the BRC grounds.

The match was reduced to 45 overs-a-side and Unichela SC put into bat first scored 215 with Kalana Sandeep (50 off 71 balls, 4 fours, 1 six) and Janaka Sampath (35) putting on an opening partnership of 54 in 7.2 overs. Gimhan Ashirwada (44 off 81 balls) helped Sandeep in a further stand of 60 for the second wicket after which Unichela SC lost their way somewhat with left-arm spinner Ruchira Silva snapping up 6/32 to bowl them under their quota of overs. Old Dharmapalians SC had a revised target of 125 to chase off 20.5 overs, but managed only 62-5. The final will be played on 14 June at the BRC grounds. – [ST]
