With just four weekends of matches to go SSC with a commanding lead of 35 points from their nearest rival Moratuwa SC look poised to run away with the Tier B 3-day title and gain promotion to the Major Club 3-day league next season.
Their opponents of the six matches commencing today are United Southern SC whom they meet at the SLLDC grounds at Kirimandala which has become their home venue as the SSC ground is currently under preparation to stage the T20 World Cup matches from next month.
United Southern SC after a strong beginning have lost ground to be placed in fourth position having lost two of their last three games with the other ending in a no-result. SSC with seven wins out of seven – six of them outright, start clear favourites to beat United Southern SC. SSC showed that they were made of champion stuff when they conceded a first innings lead to Army SC, but came back strongly in the second innings to pull off an outright win by seven wickets.
Second placed Moratuwa SC get a good opportunity to grab full points when they take on a struggling Ragama CC at Salawa Army grounds, while third placed Negombo CC following their first innings loss to Moratuwa SC last weekend have a tough task trying to beat a confident Army SC who did well to take a first innings lead off SSC, but failed to sustain it and lost outright. They meet at Army grounds, Saliyapura.
Resilient Leo CC takes on Colombo Malay CC at the BRC grounds. Malay CC have more to gain than Leo CC as they are precariously positioned second from the bottom and need to win to move away from being relegated.
The same principle applies to bottom of the table Navy SC who desperately need to lift themselves up having lost all their seven matches played so far. Navy SC meets Kandy Customs SC at Army grounds, Dombagoda. Sebastianites and Galle CC, two teams that lost last weekend, confront each other at the Moors SC grounds. (ST)
