Tier B limited-over champions SSC

  • Beat Moratuwa SC by 4 wickets in final

A near full strength SSC side with seven national players and captained by Avishka Fernando beat Moratuwa SC by four wickets to win the Tier B limited-over final played at the SSC grounds yesterday.

It was some compensation for SSC who lost the Tier B T20 final to Malay CC last month.

SSC invited Moratuwa SC to bat first and dismissed them for 231 with a ball remaining. Moratuwa SC were in deep trouble losing their first 8 wickets for 106 in the 29th over when former Panadura Sri Sumangala all-rounder Poorna Prabhath joined forces with Dumindu Sewmina, the former Lumbini College cricketer (35 off 54 balls, 3 fours, 2 sixes) to add 66 for the ninth wicket. Following Sewmina’s dismissal, Poorna single-handedly took the score from 172 to 231 with the last batsman not contributing a single run. Poorna played a superb rear-guard innings and was last out – run out for 92 scored off 80 balls (8 fours, 6 sixes). Sri Lanka Test spinner Prabath Jayasuriya was the most productive of the SSC bowlers with 4/15 off 10 overs while seamer Kasun Rajitha suffered the most from Poorna’s assault conceding 60 runs from his 7.5 overs. In SSC’s reply Nipun Dananjaya played a well-constructed innings of 73* off 104 balls (8 fours) to provide the backbone to the innings.

As champions SSC received Rs. 1 million while runner-up Moratuwa SC collected a cheque for Rs. 750,000. The Player of the Final (Rs. 200,000) was Nipun Dananjaya (SSC), Player of the Tournament (Rs. 500,000) – Krishan Sanjula (SSC), Best Batsman (Rs. 300,000) – Hirun Sigera (Leo CC) and Best Bowler (Rs. 300,000) – Sahan Kaushalya (Moratuwa SC). The awards were presented by Sri Lanka Cricket secretary Bandula Dissanayake.
