SSC, Leo CC and Moratuwa SC joined Army SC in securing outright wins in the Tier B 3-day tournament matches concluded yesterday. Army SC had on Saturday beaten Ragama CC in two days to obtain full points.
SSC completed a seven-wicket win against Sebastianites at Bloomfield grounds yesterday to register their fifth consecutive win and continue their crusade towards winning the title. Requiring 86 to win SSC knocked the runs off in 14 overs, with Shevon Daniel setting the pace with a scorching 25 off 21 balls out of an opening stand of 26 with Kavindu Nadeeshan who went on to remain unbeaten on 26.
Hiruna Sigera scored a century (130 off 166 balls, 9 fours) and put together a partnership of 114 for the third wicket with Salindu Pathirana (60 off 77 balls, 3 fours, 2 sixes) to steer Leo CC to a creditable six wickets win over Navy SC at Welisara. Navy SC who gained a first innings lead of 81 was dismissed for 192 in their second innings leaving Leo CC a target of 274 to chase which they achieved successfully.
Gayan Sirisoma, Moratuwa SC’s 44-year-old left-arm spinner bowled his club to a three-wicket win against Kandy Customs SC at Army ground, Dombagoda. Sirisoma followed his first innings haul of 6/83 with a similar number in the second innings (6/94) for match figures of 12/177 to put out Kandy Customs SC for 261 (Ashan Randika 50). Left with 153 for a win, Moratuwa SC lost seven wickets in getting there four of which were claimed by off-spinner Kaveesha Induwara. Abishek Liyanarachchi (41) and Rashmika Mevan (49) contributed with the bat for Moratuwa SC.
Galle CC ran out of time and overs to pull off an outright win against Colombo Malays CC at Moors SC grounds. With a first innings lead of 99, Galle CC dismissed Malay CC for 233 in the second innings, which left them with a target of 135. When the match ended Galle CC were 102-4. Yesith Rupasinghe struck a century (101 off 145 balls, 7 fours, 1 six) for Malay CC in their second innings and left-arm spinner Sudara Dakshina took 7/128 in Galle CC’s first innings of 378. Supun Kavinda (57 off 41 balls, 3 fours, 3 sixes) contributed in Galle CC’s run chase.
United Southern SC faced defeat at the end of the second day of their match against Negombo CC at Air Force grounds, Katunayake. Negombo CC took a handy first innings lead of 64 when they scored 220 in the first innings (Umesh Lakshan 58, Dhanosh de Silva 5/39) and dismissed United Southern SC a second time for 133 through the seam and spin of Warun Imeshan and Angelo Jayasinghe who shared eight wickets between them. Left with a target of 70 Negombo CC finished on 10 without loss needing a further 60 on the third and final day today. (ST)
