Sri Lanka Cricket will take a decision today on the type of cricket the four relegated clubs from the ongoing SLC Major League will play next season.

At the completion of the Major League 3-day first round league stage the last two clubs from the two groups will be relegated.

The affected clubs are Kalahari TC and Lankan CC from Group A, and Saracens SC and Navy SC from Group B.

Tournament Committee Chairman Samantha Dodanwela said that the SLC will send a communique to the relegated clubs after a meeting today with the SLC President Shame Silva.

“We had taken a decision at the Special General Meeting where all the clubs agreed to this structure for the betterment of cricket,” said Dodanwela. “We all know that playing 26 clubs has diluted the quality of the tournament.”

SLC’s main purpose is to relegate 14 clubs from the present 26 over a period of three years so that only 12 clubs will play in the Major League 3-day tournament.

“What we plan to do is to have Tier B going because the relegated clubs are fairly good ones and if they play in the Governor’s trophy there won’t be any improvement. So, from next year we may re-introduce Tier B and play with the four relegated teams for the initial year and thereby increase it to 14 over the next two years. The matches will be of three days duration,” Dodanwela said.

“Since we had 12 matches the demoted clubs cannot give excuses.  We have given them a fair chance of qualifying. When you have such a long tournament, definitely there will be rain affected games.” – (ST)
