Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said that it has no objection to its national cricketers continuing to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) despite the rescheduling of matches that has put back the tournament by 9 days.

The IPL was postponed on 9 May due to the cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan. But following a ceasefire on 10 May, the remaining matches of the IPL were rescheduled with the tournament due to resume on 17 May and the final on 3 June. The final was earlier scheduled for 25 May.

Some of the players returned home when the IPL was postponed.

SLC CEO Ashley de Silva said: “If the player wants to continue playing in the IPL we have no objection. We will extend their No Objection Certificates (NOC). It’s up to them whether they want to continue or whether the franchise they are representing wants them back.”

“Their absence will not affect the preparations for the matches against Bangladesh who are due to tour here for a Test, ODI and T20I series from mid next month. It is good for them to get some international exposure playing in the IPL.”

Three teams where Sri Lanka players are involved are at the bottom three of the IPL standings and have no chance of making it to the Qualifiers.

Chennai Super Kings for whom fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana plays are at the bottom in 10th position.

Rajasthan Royals whom spinners Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana represent are in 9th place and Sunrisers Hyderabad who have Kamindu Mendis and Eshan Malinga are in 8th place.

The three Sri Lankan players where their teams are in contention for a place in the Qualifiers are fast bowlers Dushmantha Chameera with 5th placed Delhi Capitals and Nuwan Thushara with 2nd placed Royal Challengers Bengaluru and all-rounder Dasun Shanaka with top of the table Gujarat Titans.

Thushara and Shanaka have not been able to get a game as yet and have been on the bench in the 11 matches their teams have played so far. Each of the 10 teams play 14 matches in the round robin league stage.
