Following the resumption of matches on Monday after a break for bad weather the quarter-finalists of the SLC Tier B T20 were found.
The final day of the group matches saw SSC, Ragama CC, Malay CC, Army SC, Navy SC and Leo CC register wins.
Formidable SSC powered by two striking innings from Dasun Shanaka (40* off 22 balls, 4 fours, 2 sixes) and Krishan Sanjula (41 off 27 balls, 5 fours, 1 six) beat Negombo CC by 7 wickets at Maggona to finish on top of Group A with an unbeaten record. Negombo CC were restricted to a total of 109-8 with Shanaka and Pramod Madushan capturing two wickets apiece. SSC knocked the runs off with 4 overs to spare.
In the same group Malay CC also ended up unbeaten winning their final group match against Galle CC by 3 wickets at Army ground, Dombagoda. Galle CC were pegged down to a total of 106-7. Malay CC went through some anxious moments being 99-7 at one stage before edging through in the 18th over. Hirantha Jayasinghe top scored for Malay CC with 47 off 46 (2 fours, 3 sixes) while former Mahinda College, Galle off-spinner Kaveen Rukshan caused a few flutters in the Malay CC camp with 3/20.
Navy SC squeezed into the top 4 of Group A with 15-run win over Sebastianites at Dombagoda. It was the sailors’ first win in the group stage and it was barely enough for them to edge out Negombo CC for the knockout spot. Navy SC defended their total of 124-9 by keeping their opponents down to 109-8. Opener Waruna Mayantha (79 off 57 balls, 4 fours, 7 sixes) and seamer Poorna Charuka (3/21) were their match winners. Lahiru Madhushanka, a right-arm seamer from Gampaha stood out for Sebastianites with figures of 4/8 that saw Navy SC collapse from 103-4 to 124-9.
Ragama CC ended their Group B campaign with a 4-wicket win over Moratuwa SC at Colts grounds that saw them finish on top of the group. Moratuwa SC’s defeat saw them fail to qualify for a place in the last eight. Invited to bat first they totaled 139-5, but Ragama CC were upto the task of overhauling that score despite losing six wickets for 108 at one stage. An unbroken 32-run stand between Koshan Jayawickrama (18*) and Vikum Sanjaya (15*) saw them home with 8 balls to spare. Sameen Kandanarachchi top scored for Ragama CC with 41 off 21 balls (4 fours, 2 sixes).
Army SC finished second to Ragama CC in the Group B standings with a six wickets win against United Southern SC at Maggona. United Southern SC managed only 111-8 in their full quota of overs. Army SC had no difficulty in surpassing that score replying with 112-4 riding on an opening stand of 69 between Ashan Sudharshana (49 off 31 balls, 9 fours, 1 six) and skipper Ishara Mendis (42 off 29 balls, 3 fours, 3 sixes). Despite the loss United Southern SC finished within the top 4 in the group to qualify for a place in the quarter-finals.
Leo CC filled the last quarter-final slot from Group B with a 6-wicket win over Kandy Customs SC at Colts grounds. In a low scoring match Kandy Customs SC scored 95-9 and Leo CC replied with 98-4 with Hiruna Sigera (32 off 34) and Romesh Suranga (36* off 33) being the principal scorers.
