Following a spate of centuries scored on the opening weekend of the SLC Major Club 3-day tournament, the second weekend in contrast began rather quietly without a single batsmen making it to the three-figure mark.

Police SC’s middle-order batsman Dulash Udayanga’s knock of 94 (off 135 balls, 12 fours) was the highest for the day. Udayanga missed out on a century for the second successive week when he was dismissed six short of a hundred for Police SC who ran up a total of 317 against Colts in a Group A table top clash at Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium, Sooriyawewa. Udayanga scored 88* to steer Police SC to an 8-wicket win against Panadura SC in the opening weekend. Opener Dhanuja Induwara (51 off 72 balls, 4 fours) and skipper Ashen Bandara (79 off 111 balls, 5 fours, 1 six) also countered the Colts bowling effectively with half-centuries. Right-arm seamer Kavishka Anjula (5/70) and spinner Akila Dananjaya (3/85) were the pick of the Colts bowlers. By the close Colts replied with 6 for no loss.

Test batsman Nishan Madushka held the CCC innings together with an unbeaten 75 off 124 balls (8 fours) on a rain-hit opening day against defending champions Bloomfield at the Galle Cricket Stadium. CCC winning the toss and choosing to bat first lost Lasith Croospulle (10) and Sahan Kosala (0) early in the innings to be 16-2. But Madushka, joined by Dhananjaya de Silva (40 off 78 balls, 2 fours) added 93 for the third wicket. CCC progressed to 156-4 off 43 overs when the heavens opened up and ended play for the day.

A fine all-round bowling performance where all six bowlers took wickets saw Nugegoda SWC dismiss Chilaw Marians CC for 203 at the NCC grounds. Kasun Vidura (52 off 105 balls, 5 fours) top scored for Chilaw Marians CC, while left-arm spinner Lohan de Zoysa (3/43) took the most wickets for Nugegoda SWC who replied with 90-3 at stumps to trail by 113.

Lahiru Udara (70 off 84 balls, 12 fours) and Vinuka Rubasinghe (76 off 144 balls, 11 fours) put together an opening stand of 115 to help NCC end the first day on 311-8 against Ace Capital CC at the SSC grounds. Chamika Karunaratne scored a 56-ball 52 (5 fours, 1 six) to help boost the NCC total from the lower order. Spinners Roshan Jayatissa and Wanuja Sahan shared the wickets with three apiece.

Moors SC’s top and middle order batsmen were all amongst the runs as they finished day one of their match against Tamil Union at the Welagedara Stadium, Kurunegala on 260-4. Openers Sadeera Samarawickrama and Janishka Perera scored 40 and 39 respectively. Then Pasindu Sooriyabandara (62* off 140 balls, 3 fours) stitched together partnerships of 54 with Sohan de Livera (60 off 95 balls, 3 fours) and 87 with Sithara Gimhan (47) to put Moors SC on a firm footing to rack up a sizeable total.

BRC seamer Mohamed Shiraz (3/71) and left-arm spinner Shashika Dulshan (4/77) did well to restrict Kurunegala YCC to a first day total of 276-9 at Surrey Village, Maggona. Manoj Sarathchandra top scored with 53 (off 73 balls, 6 fours), and Chamika Edirisinghe 45. All the matches will continue on their second day today.
