The two services teams Navy SC and Army SC registered resounding wins on the opening day of the Tier B T20 tournament on Tuesday.
Navy SC thumped Galle CC by 10 wickets at SLLDC grounds, Kirimandala. Galle CC were routed for 76 by the seam and spin of Thimira Malshan (3/17) and Ishan Abeysekera (3/14). Navy SC knocked the required runs in 6.2 overs. Adeesha Nanayakkara contributed the bulk of it with 53* off 22 balls (4 fours, 5 sixes).
Army SC beat Kandy Customs SC by 69 runs at Air Force grounds, Katunayake. Batting first Army SC ran up 201-6 courtesy fifties from Ashan Sudarshana (50 off 32 balls, 4 fours, 3 sixes) and Manushka Samith (51 off 32 balls, 3 fours, 3 sixes) and bowled out Kandy Customs SC for 132 where only the captain Yashoda Mendis made any impression with the bat – 55 off 32 balls (6 fours, 2 sixes) against the spin of Shehada Zoysa (4/28) and Janaka Sampath (3/16).
Chilaw Marians CC hit up the highest total of the day – 214-5 in their 31-run win over Kurunegala SC at Air Force grounds, Katunayake. Skipper Kasun Vidura (59 off 44 balls, 6 fours, 2 sixes) and Arosha Sithumina (79 off 44 balls, 8 fours, 4 sixes) provided the base for the total with an opening stand of 122 off 77 balls. Kurunegala SC were restricted to a total of 183-9 by the spin and seam of Thimira Irushika (3/20) and Kevin Samuel (3/42). Keshan Wanniarachchi’s 45 off 27 was the top score of their innings.
Leo CC and Ragama CC had a fight on their hands before winning. Romesh Suranga played a match-winning knock of 64* off 53 balls (4 fours, 4 sixes) to help Leo CC beat Negombo CC by 3 wickets at Welisara. Chasing Negombo CC’s score of 137-8, Leo CC lost seven wickets for 108 before clinching victory with an over to spare.
At the same venue Ragama CC pulled off a four-wicket win against Sebastianites. Sebastianites made 147 with Chamindu Perera scoring 43 off 29. Ragama CC were powered at the top by Manisha Rupasinghe (52 off 39 balls, 5 fours, 2 sixes) and then it was left to Maleesha Silva (19*) to guide them home in partnerships of 28, 27 and 16*.
The Moratuwa SC-United Southern SC game at SLLDC grounds, Kirimandala ended in a no-result with rain curtailing play. Moratuwa SC scored 164-8 and United Southern SC chasing a revised target of 113 made 21-2. – [ST]
