The Prima Sunrise Junior Open Golf Championship 2025 concluded successfully at the scenic, Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, bringing together nearly 80 young junior golfers for three days of competitive golf with star studded, Reshan Algama securing the Boys Gold segment while Indian girl, Asara Sawhney had one horse race in her segment to stamp her class in the Hill Country last weekend.
The prestigious junior event continued to receive strong backing from Prima Sunrise, who supported the tournament for the 17th consecutive year, playing a vital role in developing junior golf in Sri Lanka.
The championship once again showed the depth of emerging talent, with golfers competing across several age categories. Over three demanding rounds, the juniors demonstrated impressive technique, composure and competitive spirit while battling the cool conditions and challenging layout of the historic hill-country course.
The standout performance of the tournament came from Reshan Algama, who captured the Boys Gold Division title with a superb three-round aggregate of 217. Algama opened with an excellent 69, followed by rounds of 78 and 70, displaying remarkable consistency to secure a comfortable victory. He had a remarkable start dropping down on day 2 but bounced back strongly to end day 3 plus secure the title.
Algama’s composed play and confident ball striking kept him ahead of a competitive field, while Adhithya Weerasinghe finished as runner-up with a total of 225 after three steady rounds. Algama’s victory further cements his reputation as one of the most promising junior golfers in the country.
In the Girls Gold Division, India’s Asara Sawhney produced an impressive performance to claim the title with a three-round total of 231. Sawhney’s rounds of 79, 76 and 76 highlighted her consistency and ability to handle the challenging course conditions. Keya Abhayaratne finished as runner-up with an aggregate of 270, battling through the three rounds with determination. The competition among the girls once again reflected the steady growth of women’s junior golf in the region.
In the Silver Division (Boys 12–14), Udheera Bandara delivered a steady performance to secure the title with a total of 246, while Vihanga Liyanage finished as Runner-up with 266 after three days of competitive golf. Silver Division (Girls) saw Vihara Herath dominate the field to claim victory with 278, while Venudi Keerthana finished Runner-up with 314, displaying commendable consistency.
In the Bronze Division (Boys 10–11), Jaeden Sathasivam emerged Winner with 183, edging ahead of Yuvan Rathiskanth, who secured the Runner-up spot with 191. This was Jaeden›s maiden year in the Bronze segment in the earlier two years accounting for the Copper division.
The Bronze Division (Girls) title went to Muzammil Mushfira, who carded 223 to take first place, while Dulkini Kangara finished Runner-up with 226 in a closely contested category.
Among the youngest competitors in the Copper Division, Abhiman Abeywardhana won the Boys’ title with 101, ahead of Thisura Premarathna (109), while Pradeep Hakshhara claimed the Girls’ title with 154, with Dinara Perera finishing Runner-up on 166. (SJ)
