Group A table leaders Nugegoda SWC were denied full points in the ongoing SLC Under-23 inter-club 2-day tournament when rain prevented them from beating United Southern SC outright in their match played at the Saliyapura Army grounds, Anuradhapura yesterday.
Nugegoda SWC had to be satisfied with only a first innings points win when rain curtailed play after tea with United Southern SC trailing by 177 runs in the first innings, struggling at 167-8 in the second, especially against former Sri Lanka Under-19 cricketer Pulindu Perera’s (4/25 off 18 overs) part time off-breaks. The win which was Nugegoda SWC’s third in the first innings enabled them to consolidate their position at the top of the table.
Moratuwa SC moved to the top of Group B when they defeated table leaders Chilaw Marians CC in the first innings of their match which ended in a draw at the De Soysa Stadium, Moratuwa.
Isula Niduwara unbeaten on 86 overnight went on to complete a century – 106 off 272 balls (6 fours, 1 six) and thereby take Moratuwa SC to a total of 331. Former Peterite leg-spinner Dilana Damsara was Chilaw Marians CC’s most successful bowler with 4/66. Chilaw Marians CC in reply were dismissed for 208 and forced to follow-on scored 47-1. An 89-run stand for the sixth wicket by Darshaka Sandeep (53 off 64 balls, 8 fours) and skipper Sakuna Liyanage (43) was not good enough for Chilaw Marians CC to avoid the follow-on as their batting succumbed to two former Lumbini College cricketers – the slow left-arm orthodox spin of Ushan Sathsara (5/45) and the right-arm seam of Dumindu Sewmina (3/59).
