The 104th Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC), Club Championship entered its quarterfinal stage yesterday, producing some fine golf and setting the stage for a superb 4 clashes ahead today. Meanwhile the Ladies Bronze also reached its semi-final stage with four golfers securing their berths.
At the top of the Gents draw Jacob Norton showed excellent form, outplaying Kian Niyarepola 6/4. Junior sensation, Reshan Algama had to watch the golf action the whole day as his encounter against Rusi Captain ended in walk over for him. Norton now faces Reshan Algama.
In the third fixture, Vinuda Weerasinghe displayed composure under pressure to secure a 3/2 win over Jevahn Sathasivam. His next challenge will be Yanmik Kumara who continued his consistent run with a strong 4/3 win over Darshana Veeraaghavan. Their quarterfinal clash promises to be a thrilling duel of youthful talent.
The lower half of the draw saw Kumar Danushan edge past talented Thejas Rathiskanth 1 up. Danushan will now face Husni Uwise who impressed with steady play to defeat Suhayb Sangani.
The highlight of the opening round was Sachin de Silva gritty performance under pressure, overcoming Varun Fernando with a 2 up win. De Silva now takes on Kaiyan Johnpillai, who advanced with a commanding 6/4 victory over Adam Fernando.
With four intriguing matchups lined up, the men’s quarterfinals promise high-quality golf at the RCGC today.
In the Ladies Bronze segment Mavali Weerasinghe progressed to the semi-finals after receiving a walkover from Milan Lee. She will now face Dinushi Wanasinghe who beat Deepani Gamage 7/6.
The other semifinal will feature M.C. Sellayah overcame Dinoo de Mel 2 up. Fran de Mel beat Elis Padmanathan 1 up.
Ladies semi-finals will take place today.
