Police SC stunned Group B table leaders Tamil Union by pulling off an exciting one-wicket win in a Major Limited Overs cricket match played at Police Park yesterday.

In a low scoring match, Tamil Union were shot out for 105 in 34 overs, their batting crumbling to the spin and seam of Tillakaratne Sampath, Asel Sigera and Nisal Tharaka. Tamil Union however fought back gallantly through leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay who had back-to-back five-fors (5/44) and left-arm spinner Dilum Sudeera (4/56) to reduce Police SC to 99-9.

With seven required, Sudeera bowled a wide down the leg side that raced away to the boundary giving Police SC five valuable runs to cut the required runs to just 2. The next ball was a dot, but off the third Tharaka managed a boundary much to the delight of the Police SC team.

That loss allowed Ragama CC to draw level on points with Tamil Union and lead Group B on a better net run rate. Ragama CC chased down Badureliya SC’s total of 182 in 29 overs to win by five wickets.

NCC and Moors SC in a close tussle to qualify from Group A won their matches under the Duckworth/Lewis rain rule. Army SC leads the group with a 3-point advantage over second placed NCC. Moors SC are third 4 points behind the leaders. Only the top two teams from each group qualify for the semi-finals.

Colts, Panadura SC, Lankan CC and Negombo CC were the other teams to record victories yesterday.
