The Dialog Schools Under-19 Plate Championship was thrown wide open as both DS and Kingswood recorded crucial wins, leaving three teams – DS, St. Joseph’s. and Kingswood – with an opportunity for the title.
At Longdon Place, DS edged out St. Joseph’s in a nail-biting 37/36 thriller. The game was evenly poised at halftime with scores locked at 15-all, but DS held their nerve in the dying stages to secure a vital win. DS scored the winning try in injury time but there was no opportunity to take the conversion as the spectators encroached the playing area, putting even the safety of the referees in danger.
Referee Suranga Arunashantha officiated the encounter.
Up in Pallekele, Kingswood overcame Sumangala 34/22 in another intense battle at the Trinity College Rugby Stadium in Pallekele yesterday. Sumangala led 22/17 at the break, but Kingswood stormed back in the second half with dominant forward play and clinical finishing.
