Champions of the Donald Munasinghe tournament Seelarathana MV, Dombagoda
Peradeniya Central College emerged champions at the 49th L.V. Jayaweera inter-school boxing meet for schoolboy freshers while Seelarathana MV, Dombagoda won the Donald Munasinghe trophy for schoolgirl freshers.
The tournaments were held concurrently at the Dheerananda College, Pilimathalawa indoor stadium.
It was conducted in a new format by the Schools Boxing Association of Sri Lanka with the competition limited to 13 and 14 age groups in 15 weight classes.
Peradeniya CC regained the L.V. Jayaweera trophy producing three gold medallists and also the Best Boxer of the meet. Rivinu Herath (37-40kg), Diyunaka Jayarathna (43-46kg) and Akash Sooriyabandara (52-55kg) were the winners for Peradeniya CC with Herath being adjudged the Best Boxer. The team is coached by Dasun Priyanath while the master-in-charge of boxing Samantha Weerasinghe.
Vidyarathana University College, Horana were runners-up clinching two Gold and one Bronze medal.
Seelarathana MV, Dombagoda won three Gold, two Silver and three Bronze to win the Donald Munasinghe trophy while Lankathilaka MV were the runner-up team also winning three Gold medals.
