West Indies Academy celebrate winning the unofficial ODI series 2-1
Former West Indies U19 cricketer Shaqkere Parris hit a career best 177 off 129 balls (13 fours, 11 sixes) to power West Indies Academy to a series clinching win by 76 runs in the third and final unofficial ODI against Sri Lanka Emerging Players played at the NCC grounds yesterday.
West Indies Academy won the three-match series 2-1, with a win in the first game by two wickets and a loss in the second by 125 runs.
Parris’ dominant knock saw West Indies Academy who won the toss and batted first race to a formidable total of 349-4. Sri Lanka Emerging Players were dismissed for 273 in 42.4 overs.
Highlight of the West Indies Academy innings was the double century stand for the fourth wicket between Parris and Kevlon Anderson (86* off 78 balls, 7 fours, 2 sixes). The pair added 222 off 155 balls in an entertaining partnership that gave West Indies Academy the edge in the contest.
Faced with the daunting task of scoring at the rate of nearly seven runs an over, Sri Lanka Emerging Players floundered in their run chase losing the key wickets of Sineth Jayawardena and skipper Nipun Dananjaya for 18. Although Dinura Kalupahana (54 off 61 balls, 3 fours, 3 sixes) and Ranesh Silva (69 off 64 balls, 5 fours, 2 sixes) hit half-centuries Sri Lanka Emerging Players failed to get any big partnership going to pose any kind of threat to the West Indies Academy total. Right-arm medium-pacer Amari Goodridge was the pick of the bowlers finishing with figures of 4/56 off 7 overs.
Former Sri Lanka batsman Roy Dias presented the series winning trophy and the Player of the Match awards. West Indies Academy return home having lost the two-match unofficial 4-day test series 1-0 (1 drawn) and winning the unofficial ODI series 2-1. – [ST]
