The first match of the Governor’s Trophy 2-day tournament ended in a thrilling draw at Surrey grounds, Maggona yesterday with Saracens SC falling short by 12 runs to overhaul Lankan CC’s total of 232 and gain the crucial first innings points.

Resuming from their overnight score of 203-8 Lankan CC did well to carry it to 232 after a late start due to rain. Shahan Kaushalya held the innings together with an unbeaten 68 off 122 balls (5 fours, 1 six).

Saracens SC got off to one of their worst starts losing both openers for just eight runs to the slow left-arm spin of Lankan CC skipper Mangala Pradeep. But strong middle order contributions from Amitha Dabare (43 off 70 balls, 5 fours) and captain Chathura Hemakumara (46 off 67 balls, 3 fours, 1 six) who put on 70 for the fourth wicket and Kavindu Nimsara (45 off 95 balls, 5 fours) saw Saracens SC recover to pose a challenge to the Lankan CC total. Nimsara aided by Dellon Peiris (30* off 92 balls) figured in a crucial stand of 66 for the seventh wicket bringing Saracens SC closer to their target. But they ran out of time with the eighth wicket falling in the final over of the day. – [ST]
