Narrow escape for defending champs Peterites against Science College

Defending champions St. Peter’s College were made to work hard for their second win of the Dialog Schools Under-19 Rugby League 2025 as they narrowly edged past a resilient Science College side 29/23 in a thrilling encounter at Bambalapitiya last weekend.

The home side started strong, crossing the line four times and converting twice to build a healthy lead. Their attacking flair was evident, especially in the first half, where quick offloads and support play caught Science off guard. However, as the match wore on, St. Peter’s seemed to lose momentum, allowing Science back into the contest.

Science College, known for their grit, clawed their way back into the game with two well-constructed tries, two conversions, and three penalties, keeping the scoreboard ticking. Their kicking game proved crucial, keeping the pressure on the Petes throughout the second half.

In the dying minutes, with just a six-point gap, Science came close to delivering a stunning upset. But some resolute defence from the Petes ensured they held onto their lead till the final whistle.

It was a narrow escape for the champions, who remain in the hunt for the top spot, but the contest highlighted the growing strength and competitiveness of the league.
