Moratuwa SC denied SSC a 10th outright win with a sturdy batting performance, scoring 307 in reply to SSC’s first innings of 354 in their Tier B 3-Day League match concluded at De Soysa Stadium, Moratuwa on Sunday.

Pubudu Bandara was the mainstay of the Moratuwa SC reply scoring a resilient century (103 off 220 balls, 9 fours) and sharing an 88-run stand with captain Chanaka Ruwansiri (52 off 68 balls, 6 fours, 2 sixes). Part time bowler Nipun Dananjaya took 4/46 with his off-breaks. In SSC’s second innings of 167-7 off-spinner Rashmika Mevan took 5/69 and Lakshitha Manasinghe top scored with 60 off 63 balls (8 fours, 2 sixes). Champions SSC ended the tournament unbeaten winning all 11 matches, 9 of them outright.

Negombo CC took the runner-up spot when they defeated Navy SC by 230 runs at Welisara. Facing a stiff target of 408 Navy SC managed just 177 their batting falling apart to left-arm spinner Shehan Pramod who took 7/50 and a match bag of 13/90. Waruna Mayantha (47) and Raveen Tharindu (51 off 22 balls, 1 four, 7 sixes) were the only batsmen to impress.

Colombo Malay CC fighting hard to avoid relegation to a lower division like Navy SC also suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Ragama CC at the BRC grounds. Forced to follow-on 182 runs in arrears, Malay CC put up a much better batting performance in their second innings totalling 308 with Buddhika Hasaranga scoring a century (100 off 133 balls, 14 fours, 1 six) and number 9 batter Chanaka Devinda making 65 off 144 balls (10 fours). Off-spinner Koshan Jayawickrama took 7/110 for match figures of 11/140. Left with a simple target of 127 to chase, Ragama CC knocked it off through Manisha Rupasinghe (61* off 53 balls, 9 fours, 1 six) and Ranmith Jayasena (56 off 36 balls, 4 fours, 4 sixes).   

United Southern SC with a first innings win against Galle CC at Surrey Village grounds, Maggona retained third place. Replying to Galle CC’s first innings of 242, United Southern SC piled up 443-6 declared riding on centuries from Adithya Siriwardhana (195 off 249 balls, 17 fours, 1 six) and Thamindu Pradeeptha (104 off 135 balls, 15 fours, 2 sixes) and half-centuries from Adeesha Nanayakkara (68 off 87 balls, 7 fours, 1 six) and Pesandu Sanjan (54 off 46 balls, 5 fours, 2 sixes). Siriwardhana starred in three big partnerships of 152 for the first wicket with Nanayakkara, 184 for the second with Pradeeptha and 97 for the third with Sanjan. Galle CC in their second innings scored 126-4 with skipper Amith Eranda contributing with 56* off 43 balls (4 fours, 3 sixes).

Army SC came up with two dominant totals in their first innings win against Sebastianites at Panagoda. Army SC followed their score of 336 in the first innings with 337-7 declared. Former Sri Lanka cricketer Asela Gunaratne hit an entertaining 113 off 75 balls (17 fours, 2 sixes) and Harshajith Rushan (61 off 69 balls, 8 fours, 2 sixes). Sebastianites managed to score 292 in the first innings and 23-2 in the second. Umayanga Suwaris top scored with 52 and Seekkuge Prasanna finished with 5/71.

Leo CC ended the season with their fifth outright win defeating Kandy Customs SC inside two days by six wickets at Air Force grounds, Katunayake on Saturday. – [ST]
