Former Sri Lankan cricketers – Upul Tharanga stroked a century and Dilruwan Perera picked up five wickets in the SLC Major Club T20 tournament matches concluded yesterday.

In a top of the table Group D clash Moors SC edged out CCC by four runs in a close game, while there were wins for BRC, Panadura SC, NCC, Negombo CC and Army SC.

Former Sri Lanka spinner Dilruwan Perera back with his former club BRC bowled them to victory over Galle CC by 45 runs with figures of 5/14 at CCC Grounds. BRC made 143-8 with Bhagya Dissanayake making a top score of 50 off 53 balls (2 fours, 2 sixes) and seamer Hansmana de Silva and off-spinner Tharinda Nimal taking three wickets apiece. Galle CC were shot out for 98 off 16.5 overs.

A fine all-round performance by Rajeewa Weerasinghe (44* off 26 balls, 1 four, 4 sixes and 3/20) enabled Panadura SC beat Police SC by 12 runs in the second match played at the venue. Panadura SC scored 155-6 and Police SC replied with 143-9.

In a thrilling contest from Group D between the two top sides, Moors SC edged out CCC by four runs at Panagoda. CCC chasing 161 and requiring 12 off the last over with four wickets in hand lost their Captain Minod Bhanuka off the second ball for a well-constructed innings of 66 off 39 balls (5 fours, 4 sixes) and with it their chances of winning eroded despite Chaturanga de Silva hitting the penultimate ball for six. Moors SC invited to bat first reached 160-9 riding on Mohammad Shamaz’s half-century off 33 balls (2 fours, 3 sixes).

Former Sri Lanka ODI Captain and opener Upul Tharanga continued his excellent form in the tournament stroking his way to a brilliant century (101 off 67 balls, 6 fours, 7 sixes) to help NCC beat Chilaw Marians CC by 56 runs in the second game played at the venue. Riding on Tharanga’s century and his 112 runs stand with Ahan Wickramasinghe (38 off 22 balls, 3 sixes), NCC rattled off 187-6. Spinners Lasith Embuldeniya (3/38) and Ashian Daniel (3/10) restricted Chilaw Marians CC to 131-9 despite a valiant knock of 80* off 59 balls (4 fours, 5 sixes) from opener Kasun Vidura.

Negombo CC broke their barren run with a 13-run win over Kandy Customs SC at the NCC Grounds. Negombo CC defended their total of 139-7 (Kavindu Irosh 40 off 29 balls, 4 fours, 2 sixes) by keeping their opponents down to 126-7 despite an unbeaten 54 off 38 balls (2 fours, 3 sixes) from Kandy Customs SC skipper Mithun Jayawickrema. Sachindu Colombage the off-spinner took 3/13.

Leg-spinner Lilan Fernadinandu spun defending champions Army SC to a comprehensive eight-wicket win over Air Force SC in the second game played at this venue. The Airmen collapsed for 66 against Fernadinandu who ended up taking four wickets for 16 runs opening the bowling. Army SC knocked the runs off in 10 overs. (ST)
