  • Major Club 3-day League Super Eights intensifies

By Sa’adi Thawfeeq

The race for the Major Club 3-day League title has certainly intensified following the results of last weekend’s matches.

The remaining two weekends of Super Eight matches are certainly going to be keenly fought out as Moors SC, Colts, NCC, Ace Capital CC and CCC vie for the title.

As the only teams to grab full points last weekend, both Moors SC and Colts occupy one-two spots in the current standings going into the four matches starting today. Only three points separate them and neither can have any room to falter as it would mean falling back on points and making it harder for them to come back.

Moors SC led by Sri Lanka Test spinner Ramesh Mendis are in with a great chance of winning the title only for the second time in their history. Their solitary success came in 2002-03 under the leadership of Rangana Herath. Their victory with full points against defending champions Bloomfield last weekend catapulted them to the top of the standings and if they can repeat their success against Police SC at Pallekele this weekend, the chances of laying hands on the trophy will become almost close to reality.

Pursuing Moors SC hotly are Colts who last won the title when it was named as the Premier Trophy in 2011-12 under Malinda Warnapura. Their win by seven wickets against Ace Capital CC kept them in the hunt for the title. Captained by all-rounder Dhananjaya Lakshan, Colts meet bottom of the table and Havelock Park rivals BRC at the NCC grounds. They have a great chance of grabbing full points and enhancing their prospects.

Losing finalist of last year NCC trailing Moors SC by seven points takes on Bloomfield whose chances of retaining the title look rather slim following back-to-back defeats to Ace Capital CC and Moors SC. This game which takes place at the R. Premadasa Stadium will see a repeat of last year’s final when these two teams clashed and Bloomfield emerged winners. NCC will want to reverse that decision and grab full points if they are to remain in contention for the title.

Ace Capital CC and CCC will battle it out at the Colts grounds with both teams requiring full points to get anywhere close to becoming title contenders. So far neither team has been able to do that.
