Malwatte Valley vs Maskeliya at the Cup final

The 24th Inter Plantation Rugby Sevens concluded in grand style at Dickoya, with Malwatte Valley Plantations defending their title, defeating Maskeliya 31-7 in an electrifying Cup final played before a packed and lively crowd.

Competing for the prestigious Bartleet Meyer Trophy, the tournament once again lived up to its reputation as one of the most entertaining rugby festivals in the Hill Country. With PEO TV as the official broadcast partner, fans across the island were able to witness the fast-paced action and festive atmosphere.

Malwatte stamped their authority from the outset, dominating the group stage with emphatic wins, including a 64-0 rout of Balangoda and a commanding 38-0 victory over Hatton. They continued their fine form in the knockout stage, brushing aside Kotagala 24-5 in the semi-final before producing a clinical display in the final.

Maskeliya, who impressed on their way to the final with notable wins over Kelani Valley and Elpitiya, were unable to match Malwatte’s structure and finishing. Despite their spirited effort, Malwatte’s cohesion and experience proved decisive in the title clash.

In the subsidiary finals, Kelani Valley clinched the Bowl title with a hard-fought 19-14 win over Talawakelle. Kotagala edged out Elpitiya 17-14 to secure the Plate championship, while Hatton dominated Balangoda 24-0 to win the Shield.

For over 24 years, the Inter Plantation Sevens has played a key role in developing rugby within plantation communities, providing a platform for emerging talent. Once again, the tournament showed the passion, skill, and lasting contribution of plantation rugby to Sri Lanka’s sporting landscape.

The event was once again under the watchful eyes of Tournament Director and former Ananda ruggerite Manjula Samarakoon, with former Kingswoodian A.C. Tennekoon as the Deputy in organising the tournament.

Next year being the Silver Jubilee, plans are underway to bring some South Asian planters’ outfits as well.
