Sammu Ashan, the former Sri Lanka Under19 cricketer, scored his second successive century in the ongoing Major Plate competition to help Chilaw Marians CC to a first day total of 239-9 against before bad light brought an early end against Badureliya SC at the Welagedara Stadium, Kurunegala yesterday.
Ashan followed his knock of 146 against Tamil Union last weekend with another inspiring innings of 101 off 173 balls (9 fours). With Kasun Vidura (43), Ashan added 126 for the fifth wicket. Fast bowler Buddika Sanjeewa (4/81) and leg-spinner Suminda Lakshan (4/49) shared the wickets.
Kurunegala YCC’s left-handed opener Gayan Maneeshan was also one of the centurions yesterday helping his team to a total of 231-6 against Nugegoda SWC at the Galle Cricket Stadium. Maneeshan hit 8 fours in his 233-ball knock for 112. Former Sri Lanka U19 fast bowler Nipun Malinga captured five of the six wickets to fall for 42 runs.
Tamil Union did well to capture seven Panadura SC wickets for 240 at Surrey Village grounds, Maggona. Leg-spinner Vijayakanth Viyaskanth helped himself to three wickets for 48, while Shalith Fernando made a top score of 90 off 162 balls (6 fours, 2 sixes).
All three matches were affected by bad light and had early finishes. The matches will continue on the second day today. – [ST]
