Navod Paranavithana 124* for Tamil Union Dilshan de Soysa 129* for Badureliya SC

Tamil Union and Badureliya SC made forceful starts on the opening day of the Major Plate competition yesterday.

Choosing to bat first Tamil Union rode on former Mahinda College, Galle cricketer Navod Paranavithana’s unbeaten century (124* off 260 balls, 8 fours) to hit up an impressive 306-4 against Chilaw Marians CC at the Galle Cricket Stadium.

Paranavithana featured in a 113-run second wicket stand with his captain Minod Bhanuka (62 off 106 balls, 7 fours) and an unfinished partnership of 85 with Sharujan Shanmuganathan (40*) for the fifth wicket.

Badureliya SC also got off to a sound start reaching 259-3 against Nugegoda SWC at the Welagedara Stadium, Kurunegala. Former Balapitiya Revatha College cricketer Dilshan de Soysa contributed an unbeaten 129* off 227 balls (12 fours) and was involved in two noteworthy partnerships of 90 with Roshan Wijenayake (55 off 107 balls, 6 fours) and an unfinished 141 with Geeth Kumara (55* off 157 balls, 4 fours).

Kurunegala YCC struggled to 209-7 off 90 overs against Panadura SC at Surrey Village grounds, Maggona. The middle order came to Kurunegala YCC’s rescue after they had lost their first three wickets for 20. Manoj Sarathchandra scored 50 off 131 balls (5 fours) and Lakshan Edirisinghe 76 off 194 balls (7 fours, 1 six). But once they departed Kurunegala YCC suffered another collapse losing 3 for 33. Seamers Mohamed Dilshad and Asanka Manoj accounted for five of the wickets.
