Table toppers Police SC (Group A) and CCC (Group B) will look to consolidate their positions when the SLC Major Club 50-over tournament continues in its third day today with a card of 6 matches.
Police SC meets second placed Chilaw Marians CC at the SSC grounds, while CCC host Moors SC at CCC grounds.
Defending champions Ace Capital CC will be the guests of NCC at the NCC grounds. Ace Capital CC are still searching for their first win having lost the two matches they have played so far.
Tamil Union have a chance to improve their position when they take on wooden spoonists Panadura SC at the P Sara Oval.
Second placed Bloomfield have a tough game on their hands against third placed Nugegoda SWC at Bloomfield grounds, while Colts with a win and a loss will want to improve their position when they host Kurunegala YCC at Colts grounds.
One of the major changes that has taken place in the matches is that the toss has been done away with and the choice to bat or bowl first has been given to the visiting team.
“This decision was taken after consultation with the national selectors, provincial selectors, the HPC, Tournament Committee and Umpires Committee who came up with these suggestions,” said Tournament Committee Chairman Nalin Aponso.
“It has been introduced to null and void teams from taking undue advantage of the wicket. It has been aimed mainly for the lower division matches to stop teams from manipulating the ground. This rule is being practiced in matches played in England. We decided to introduce it in the ongoing Major Club 50-over tournament. This has had a positive impact because we see clubs preparing fair wickets as they don’t have the advantage of the toss.”
Aponso said that the rule will not apply for venues selected by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).
The wickets for the semi-finals and final will be prepared under SLC supervision. All the matches will be played at the CCC grounds under lights.” (ST)
