NCC and CCC made the maximum use of excellent batting conditions to pile up huge totals on the opening day of the Major Club 3-day Super Eights second weekend of matches which began yesterday.
Centuries from Lahiru Udara and Kamil Mishara saw NCC pile up the highest total for the day – 386-2 against Police SC at the Galle International Cricket Stadium. Choosing to bat first, NCC were given a solid foundation by openers Pathum Nissanka (77 off 90 balls, 12 fours, 1 six) and Udara (159* off 246 balls, 15 fours) who put on 128. Following Nissanka’s and Niroshan Dickwella’s (35) dismissals to left-arm spinner Dilum Sudeera, Mishara joined hands with Udara to pile on the agony for Police SC as they figured in an unfinished partnership of 192 for the third wicket. Mishara completed his 7th first-class hundred before the close (109* off 169 balls, 8 fours, 3 sixes) which also took him past 3,000 runs in first-class cricket playing in his 46th match.
Sri Lanka Test captain Dhananjaya de Silva led CCC’s run splurge at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium where they piled up 360-5 in 80 overs after being invited to bat first by BRC. Dulnith Sigera scored 81 off 126 balls (12 fours, 1 six) at the top before De Silva combined with Anjala Bandara (64* off 97 balls, 8 fours) poured further frustration on the hapless BRC bowlers putting together an unfinished sixth wicket stand of 124. Off-spinner Murvin Abinash took three of the five wickets to fall for 92 runs.
Colts fought back through their spinners Akila Dananjaya (4/75) and Dunith Wellalage (2/48) to keep Ace Capital CC down to a total of 290 at the CCC grounds. Choosing to bat first Ace Capital CC lost three wickets without any addition to the total to slump from 113-1 to 113-4 before a 90-run stand between Ranesh Silva (42) and Kavindu Kulasekera (61 off 94 balls, 9 fours) put them on course for a big first innings score. However, Colts chipped through their middle and lower order batting to capture the last five wickets for 73 runs. By the close Colts had replied with 10-0.

Chanuka Dilshan (4/67) had Bloomfield in all sorts of trouble
The Bloomfield v Moors SC at the Colts grounds was nicely poised at the end of day one. Bloomfield had to depend on their lower order to rescue them. They slumped to 107-7 after deciding to bat first, and only a partnership of 87 between Tharindu Harshana (59 off 123 balls, 5 fours) and Jeffrey Vandersay (63 off 99 balls, 7 fours, 1 six) saw them end up with a total of 229. Much of Bloomfield’s batting problems were caused by left-arm spinner Chanuka Dilshan who ended with figures of 4/67. By the close Moors SC had lost both their openers to be 36-2 and trail Bloomfield by 193 runs. All four matches will continue on their second day today.
