Defending champions Bloomfield, not having one of their best seasons, were bowled out for 192 on the opening day of the Major Club 3-Day League match against Group A table leaders Police SC at the P. Sara Oval yesterday.

Invited to bat first, Bloomfield could not get their innings going as the left and right-arm seam combination of Nipun Premaratne and Charuka Pramod made inroads into their batting, reducing them to 96-7. An 80-run partnership between Ravindu Fernando (47) and Duvindu Tillakaratne (32) revived the innings and saw them reach their final total. Premaratne (2/55) and Pramod (4/40) took six wickets between them, and left-arm spinner Dilum Sudeera cleaned up the tail, taking 3/39. Police SC wiped out 121 of the runs for the loss of two wickets, with Avishka Tharindu scoring an undefeated 78 off 97 balls (9 fours, 3 sixes).

Sohan de Livera hit a compact 139 off 160 balls (14 fours) and shared a fourth wicket stand of 198 with Sithara Gimhan (76 off 149 balls, 7 fours) that enabled Moors SC to score 298-5 against Kurunegala YCC at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium, Sooriyawewa.

Sadeera Samarawickrama struck a 48-ball 43 (5 fours) out of an opening stand of 53.

Pavan Rathnayake struck his 12th first-class century (116 off 170 balls, 9 fours, 3 sixes) and Nishan Madushka scored 50 off 67 balls (7 fours) to enable CCC to a total of 309 against Panadura SC at the Galle Cricket Stadium. Off-spinner Dushan Vimukthi took 7/87 for Panadura SC, who ended the day on 17 without loss.

Group B leaders NCC did well to restrict Tamil Union to a first-day total of 244-6 at the Colts Grounds. A 125-run stand between Isivara Dissanayake (54 off 155 balls, 2 fours) and Sharujan Shanmuganathan (87 off 184 balls, 6 fours, 2 sixes) saw Tamil Union recover from 76-4 after electing to bat first.

Vinura Dulsara (52* off 72 balls, 6 fours) and Suminda Lakshan (40* off 44 balls, 6 fours) figured in an unfinished seventh wicket stand to help Badureliya SC to 232-6 before bad light ended play against Ace Capital CC at the CCC Grounds.

The opening day’s play in the match between Colts and Nugegoda SWC at the Welagedara Stadium, Kurunegala, was washed out without a ball bowled due to rain.

All the matches will continue on their second day today. – [ST]
