Defending champions CCC and runner-up Police SC secured their second consecutive wins in the ongoing Major Clubs Limited-Over tournament defeating Nugegoda SWC and BRC respectively in the matches concluded yesterday.
In a high scoring game that produced 708 runs at the CCC grounds, the home team were made to fight hard by Nugegoda SWC before winning by 24 runs. Chasing a tall target of 367, Nugegoda SWC were cruising to victory at 334-6 in 44 overs when left-arm spinner Inuka Karannagoda who had conceded 58 runs in his first eight overs was brought back into the attack. He turned the game on its head by picking up three wickets for two runs and Nugegoda SWC folded up for 342 to hand to CCC an unlikely win with 16 balls to spare. Leading the Nugegoda SWC run chase was former Sri Lanka Under19 opener Pulindu Perera who hit a sparkling 129 off 90 balls (16 fours, 5 sixes) and Sandun Mendis who kept Nugegoda SWC’s hopes alive with 65 off 43 balls (6 fours, 4 sixes). The majority of wickets was taken by part-time off-spinner Lasith Croospulle who returned figures of 4/7 in 2.2 overs. Anjala Bandara (150* off 127 balls, 12 fours, 4 sixes) and Sahan Kosala (132* off 68 balls, 9 fours, 10 sixes) starred for CCC putting together a massive unbroken stand of 239 off 137 balls that saw them reach an imposing 366-4.
Police SC powered by veteran cricketer Tillakaratne Sampath’s century (111 off 114 balls, 16 fours) sped to an easy six wickets win over BRC at Police Park. 44-year-old Sampath bowled economically taking 1/34 off 10 overs to restrict BRC to 234-9 before steering the team to victory with more than 10 overs to spare. Isuru Fernando (57 off 87 balls, 6 fours, 1 six) and Movin Subasingha (63 off 54 balls, 2 fours, 3 sixes) were BRC’s prime scorers.
Moors SC went to the top of Group B table with a facile seven-wicket win against Tamil Union at the P Sara Oval. Moors SC chased down Tamil Union’s score of 271 through their fourth wicket pair Janishka Perera (64* off 85 balls, 4 fours) and Ramesh Mendis (75* off 70 balls, 6 fours, 1 six) who added 116 in an unbroken stand off 121 balls after Sithara Gimhan (50 off 54 balls, 8 fours) and Sohan de Livera (45 off 38 balls, 4 fours, 2 sixes) had given them a good start. Tamil Union recovered from 98-6 to total 271 through a seventh wicket stand of 116 between Sachitha Jayathilake (59 off 75 balls, 4 fours, 1 six) and Lahiru Samarakoon (64 off 56 balls, 7 fours, 2 sixes). Seamers Santhush Gunatilake and Shiran Fernando took seven wickets between them.
NCC suffered their second defeat in the tournament when Colts beat them by 78 runs at the Colts grounds. Left-arm seamer Dilshan Madushanka took 3/27 to rout NCC for 149 after Colts had scored 227-7 where Shalin de Mel top scored with 49.
In the other matches completed yesterday, Ace Capitals CC beat Kurunegala YCC by five wickets at Welagedara Stadium and SSC beat Badureliya CC by eight wickets at the NCC grounds. Off-spinner Traveen Mathew took 4/40 and Thanuka Rajapakse (60 off 65 balls, 8 fours, 1 six) and Kaushika Kumarasinghe (57 off 72 balls, 6 fours, 1 six) produced an opening stand of 110 as Ace Capitals CC chased down Kurunegala YCC’s total of 178.
An all-round bowling performance saw SSC dismiss Badureliya CC for 136. SSC knocked the runs off in 22.1 overs with Shevon Daniel contributing 43 off 35 balls. [ST]
