Governor’s Trophy 50 Over champions Saracens SC did well to capture eight Lankan CC wickets for 203 runs on the opening day of the Governor’s Trophy two-day tournament match played at Surrey Cricket Ground, Maggona yesterday.
Winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Lankan CC were troubled by the off-breaks of Deshan Fernando, who made early inroads to reduce them to 115-6 despite opener Kalana Madushanka scoring a rapid 42 off 43 balls (5 fours, 2 sixes) and Thewin Amarasinghe a sedate 38 off 83 (3 fours, 1 six).
Sahan Kaushalya and Sasindu Bettage revived the innings with a partnership of 56 for the seventh wicket. Bettage was over defensive in his knock of 13, which came off 101 balls. Kaushalya, the former Lumbini MV skipper, played a patient innings at the other end, reaching his half-century before stumps to remain undefeated on 58 (113 balls, 5 fours, 1 six).
Saracens SC used as many as nine bowlers, of which Fernando was the most successful, ending the day with figures of 3/65.
The match continues on its second day today.
This is a three-way contest between member clubs Saracens SC, Lankan CC, and Old Dharmapalians SC, where the team finishing on top of the league will be promoted to play in Tier B for the 2027-28 season. – [ST]
