Kusal Mendis switches allegiance from PSL to IPL

Sri Lanka’s wicket-keeper/batsman Kusal Mendis who has been representing Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) has switched allegiance and will appear for Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the play-offs.

It is learnt that Mendis is not too keen to travel to Pakistan for the remainder of the PSL due to apparent safety concerns and has decided to switch leagues and appear in the IPL for the first time.

The vacancy for Mendis has been created by the unavailability of England wicket-keeper/bat Jos Buttler for the play-offs as he has been named in England’s ODI squad for the home series against West Indies which starts on 29 May, the same day as the IPL play-offs.

Mendis has been in good form for the Gladiators scoring 143 runs at a strike rate of 168 in five PSL matches.

Gujarat Titans are currently heading the IPL table and are virtually qualified to play in the play-offs. Butler is expected to play for the Titans in their three remaining league matches. The IPL is set to resume on 17 May after it was suspended from 9 May due to cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan.
