Kingswood College yesterday finally broke through for their first win of the Schools Under-19 Rugby League Tournament after edging out Science College 25/21 in a closely contested thriller played at the Trinity College Rugby Stadium.
Both teams entered the game determined to finish the first round on a high note and produced an entertaining encounter filled with attacking rugby and strong defence. Kingswood managed to take a narrow 8/7 lead at halftime after an evenly balanced opening spell.
The Randles Hill school gradually gained momentum in the second half with their backs running strongly and forwards dominating key phases of play. Menusha Marasinghe, Temash Thilakratne, and Shamath Shafraz crossed the line for Kingswood’s tries. Shafraz turned out to be the match winner with an outstanding all-round performance, adding two conversions and two penalties to steer his side home.
Science College fought back courageously and kept pressure on Kingswood until the final whistle. Their tries came through Methun Senaratne, Oshada Fonseka, and Tharusha Gallage, while Fonseka converted all three tries.
Referee Hasantha Weranga officiated the game.
Both teams now advance to the Bowl segment of the Super Round, with Kingswood carrying valuable points forward. (SJ)
