Kaya Daluwatte |
Sri Lanka’s Kaya Daluwatte yesterday produced a memorable performance to capture the Girls’ segment at the Singha Junior Golf Championship 2025 in Thailand, marking one of the biggest international junior golf wins for the island nation.
Daluwatte showed tremendous composure over the four rounds, returning scores of 71, 75, and 69 for a total of 215 (-1). Her brilliant final round under pressure sealed a two-shot victory over a strong international field. This success comes after, just the week prior, she was the first junior to win a medal for Sri Lanka at the Asian Youth Games (AYG) 2025, which took place in Bahrain, where she won a Bronze medal.
Japan’s Rinka Nakayama finished as runner-up with scores of 72, 77, and 68 for an overall 217 (+1), delivering an excellent late charge that wasn’t enough to catch the in-form Sri Lankan. Singapore’s Passion Hsu claimed third place with rounds of 71, 75, 77 = 223 (+7), displaying consistency across all three days.
In the Boys’ segment, Reshan Algama after an ordinary start bounced back strongly to finish at a total score of 221 (+5) ending at number 8. At the AYG too, he ended in the top 10 in Bahrain a week prior. Meanwhile, Adhithya Weerasinghe finished 14th with a total score of 233, while Thejas Rathis Kanth showed lot of maturity at his very young age, scoring a total of 245 stroked to end at a commendable 21st position overall.
In the Girls’ team event, Japan won pushing Thailand to number 2 and Vietnam to number 3. In the Boys’ segment, Thailand won and South Korea were runner-up, with Sri Lanka ending sixth out of the nine teams. Algama and Weerasinghe participated in the Boys’ event.
