Former Trinity College Rugby Lion, Kandy SC stalwart, and national sevens and fifteens player, Inthi Marikar, is tipped to be appointed as the Director of Rugby for the National Team.
With a wealth of experience both on and off the field, Marikar’s return marks a significant step forward for Sri Lankan rugby. His appointment is likely to be made today by the Director General of Sport, Shemal which will be for Asia Rugby Top 4 which will take place next month between Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, South Korea and UAE.
Marikar has served previously as the national sevens Head Coach and as High Performance Manager, earning widespread respect for his strategic insight and leadership. His latest appointment was made by the Director General of Sports, Shemal Fernando, the team prepares for crucial upcoming matches.
The assignment will see Marikar guide the national side through the prestigious Asia Rugby Top 4 tournament. Sri Lanka will face South Korea and UAE at home, while the clash against Hong Kong will be an away fixture.
The stakes are high. The winner of the Asia Rugby Top 4 will earn direct qualification to the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, a dream long held by Sri Lankan rugby fans. Even the runner-up has a chance at glory, as they will play the African runner-up in a home-and-away playoff. Victory in this tie will also secure a spot in the World Cup.
Dushanth Lewke will continue as the Forwards Coach while Saliya Kumara will be the Backs Coach. National squad commenced training yesterday and the current pool will be reduced in the near future.
